Save the Date: March 25th. After Rikers: Changing Course for People with Serious Mental Illness
This forum will open with a new, 15-minute documentary produced by Public Square Media that explores the vision for New York's planned community-based jails as part of its efforts to reform the criminal justice system and significantly reduce incarceration in the City. The film will be followed by a panel discussion with City officials, advocates and mental health professionals.
Deciding to close Rikers was the first and perhaps easiest step on the path to closing Rikers. This forum series, After Rikers, will explore the complex steps that will set the stage for the next 50 years in mental health and criminal justice policy in New York.
During this two hour program, we will discuss ways to secure treatment, instead of incarceration, for those living with serious mental illness.
